If you have not yet heard the name Derek Brans, you are about to in a big way. Derek’s distinctive lyrics and alluring stage presence are earning him a reputation as a charismatic performer. This reputation along with his reserved, yet approachable charm and kooky sense of humour, wrapped in pouty, boyish good looks is garnering him a loyal and rapidly growing fan base. Derek’s brand of adult contemporary music is layered with complex, yet honest lyrics that merge with memorable melodies.
Derek’s passion for music and performance was evident from very early on in his life.
From ages 6 to 15, Derek studied classical piano at the Suzuki School of Music in Toronto. This developing passion for music fueled his desire to write his own music and lyrics.
As part of his later development, Derek studied guitar with acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Michael Friedman in Vancouver. Because of his intense desire to continually learn and perfect his skills, Derek also sought out and studied under the supervision of celebrated vocal instructor Correlynne Haney of Vancouver.
In the year 2000, Derek began expressing his passion for music by performing his songs to local audiences in Vancouver bars and, later on, at local music festivals. He received tremendous encouragement from audience members.
His musical talent, in combination with his story-telling gifts and love of performing, naturally led to writing musical theatre and an acclaimed Fringe production (Vancouver, 2002)
Following his musical theatre success in 2002 and in an effort to encourage other songwriters, Derek ran a very successful lyric-writing workshop that allowed many local musicians to improve their lyric-writing abilities. To further enhance the local music scene, Derek also produced many events in
Vancouver that showcased local musical talent.
In 2003, Derek was awarded the Factor’s prestigious Professional Recording Grant for $2000.00 in recognition of his efforts as a performer, and as a result of his successful membership in the Vancouver music community. This award led to the completion of a recording project with rock producer Mark Henning later that year.
In early 2004, Derek began his second recording project with Stephan Ritch, a much sought after Montreal francophone musician and producer The successful result of this musical relationship was the production of a 6-song adult contemporary demo.
In the fall of 2005, Derek moved his base of operations to Montreal in order to be closer to his family in Toronto, and to pursue his performance career. Derek is currently performing around Montreal, accompanied by acclaimed francophone drummer Stephan Ritch and bassist Stéphane Pétroca.
